Walkers will raise money for prevention programs

The issue of violence against women is being taken on by the Laval Chomedy Chapter of Jewish Women International of Canada under the guidance of Laval resident Tzipie Freedman. The event is called <@Ri>Walk in Her Shoes<@p> and will be taking place on May 4th 2008 from 9 a.m. until noon in Ville St. Laurent.

The Chomedy chapter has been involved since the event first began ten years ago and will be supplying refreshments this year. "We want to raise the profile of violence against women," said Freedman, "It's always been an important issue but it's coming out of the closet now."

Freedman said that the level of violence on school campuses seems to be on the rise. Money raised at the event will go towards educational projects for CEGEP's to educate students on what constitutes a healthy relationship. Money will also go to translating the material into French and distributing films produced by the JWIC such as one entitled "When push comes to shove it's no longer love." In this way, Freedman said, while funding ways for women to get help they're also funding ways in which to prevent violence in the first place.

The JWIC also maintains four ASTEH (Alternative Short Term Emergency Housing) apartments in cities across the country, including one in Montreal, to house women on the run from an abusive relationship.

The event is sponsored by CJAD host Dr. Laurie Betito as spokesperson. "She has been very helpful in lending her name and her reputation," said Freedman.

A minimum of $360 must be raised by teams of four and individuals must raise $100. Participants will be fed and will receive goodie bags.

The event will begin with the presentation of a play entitled "Unspoken Words" and later on a silent auction will take place. The event has raised close to $225,000 over the past nine years to sponsor prevention and help programs.

Walk in Her Shoes will take place Sunday, May 4th at the Club Sportif CDL, 8305 Cote de Liesse Road, in Ville Saint Laurent from 9 a.m. to noon. For information or registration forms, contact the JWIC office at 514-487-2330 or visit their website at www.jwicanada.com PHOTO DIGITALES: Tzipie.jpg
