Laval hoopsters get a real dunkin' treat from NBA star Samuel Dalembert
Sam How good was Dalembert with the kids? After giving them a terrific pep talk on being disciplined, staying in school, studying hard, and doing their best to develop their athletic talents, he took on one of the boys in a shooting contest with a promise to pay the lad $100 if he won. Well, Thierry Cherestral, Samuel's young opponent, sank 4 out of five, while the NBA star missed (?) twice. Thierry is pictured with Samuel (and the $100 bill) he earned in the shooting drill. Laval hoopsters get a real dunkin' treat from NBA star Samuel Dalembert
Give 'em hell when they deserve it, but give 'em praise when they earn it.
In an era of excess among most professional athletes, given their scandalous salaries and their even more scandalous conduct on and off the field, there are still shining lights who can reach into their hearts and make generous gestures which can touch lives, especially the lives of young people who worship professional athletes and look up to them as heroes.
Out of nowhere?
Case in point? Samuel Dalembert, starting centre of the National Basketball Association's Philadelphia 76ers and an $8 million man who's not forgotten his friends and his roots in Laval, where he learned some of his early basketball. Samuel, you should know, took the time recently to drop in at the 4th Annual NIVA Basketball Camp, for a surprise visit with ex-teammate Paul Stephens, the founder and director of the camp. The basketball star's visit was as much a surprise to coach Stephens as it was to the young athletes attending the camp.
But not surprisingly, the camp at Laval Liberty High School was abuzz the entire time Dalembert was there. "We had spoken the week before and I had mentioned the camp and how the kids would be ecstatic if he would show up and he told me he would try to make it. All of a sudden I get a call from Sam who was driving around Laval looking for the school!"

When he finally arrived, Dalembert was greeted by 100 young basketball players who got to see the 7-footer engage in a friendly but spirited shooting contest with the campers. "But nothing could beat the looks on these young people's faces when they were treated to Samuel's brief but amazing display of dunking. A truly unique experience for these aspiring young basketball players." Coach Stephens, explained, his voice awash with excitement.

Paul Stephens was assisted at the 2007 NIVA Basketball Camp by the following coaches and professional players: Domenico Marcario (Montmorecy alumni) now playing in France's top professional league; J.J Brade (Montreal Royal) and brother Shuan (Bishop's University); Vic Ajula from Morgan State University (NCAA); Marie Eve Beaulieu (McGill University all-star); J.P Herbert, Ste-Dorothée, (Montmorency Nomads); Guest Pro players: Bobby Miller (Western Laval Alumni and current captain of the Montreal Royal); Mohammed Hachad (Swiss Elite league).
