A captivating moment at one of the many special gatherings of the Story Hour With Ellie & Marilyn held this past year. This is Ellie, in red, a child at heart herself, sharing a visual insight with some of the youngsters in attendance, while parents look on with avid interest.

'Story Hour With Ellie and Marilyn' set to turn another page in helping children develop a love of literature and a passion for reading
2007-2008 season of reading series soon to begin at Laval Multicultural Library
The 2006-2007 season of the Laval Multicultural Librray's 'Story Hour With Ellie & Marilyn' was memorable in many ways, but most of all because it significantly advanced the mission of two community stalwarts who have put their pride and passion into bringing literature to children of Chomedey and Laval, ages 3 to 6, for the past couple of years.
"This popular activity for the tot-lot has experienced a steady growth over its inception two years ago and average attendance has grown to 25 children who drop by the Multicultural for their regular and familiar semi-monthly dose of reading," says Eleanor Tylbor, the Ellie part of the Ellie & Marilyn team, Marilyn Silverman being the other.
Time well-spent
This is good stuff for children who are developing the listening skills needed for reading and writing. And not to be ignored is the potential for these experiences to also enhance the oral skills of youngsters learning English as a second or third language. Children (and parents) have much to look forward to come September when, we're told, the series will return.
Any visit to the Multicultural Library on a typical Saturday morning when Ellie and Marilyn are animating the imagination of children ages would speak volumes about the good that's being done by these two outstanding individuals who often pump not only time into the reading project but also their own personal resources. "It has truly become a family affair in the past couple of years," says Eleanor, adding that she and Marilyn have seen more and more grandparents also coming with the children.
"We encourage grandparents and other adult family members to spend this precious and quality time with the children, in an atmosphere of learning through fun," Ellie sums up.
The future
"Our new fall session of 'Story Hour With Ellie and Marilyn' is a go with our first get-together to take place Saturday, September 8," Eleanor Tylbor tells Courrier Laval Weekly News.
Both Marilyn and Ellie say they're very excited to meet their young friends, many of whom have been attending the Saturday morning readings since they first began more than two years ago.
"It's very personally rewarding for us to see their interest in books, which is the reason for our creating and initiating the program in the first place," Ellie explains, adding that it's very satisfying to see the children's faces light up as the many wonderful words are read and the vividly colourful illustrations are shown. It's a true delight!" she concludes.
Participation in the 'Story Hour With Ellie and Marilyn' is free. Brothers and sisters, and all family members are welcome, but an adult family member must accompany the children. Space is limited so reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by contacting the Multicultural Library.
If you have children ages 3 to 6 and would like them to participate in these wonderful
little journeys into literature, give the Multicultural Library a call and let them know that you're interested. The more calls, the greater is the likelihood that more resources will be put at Ellie's and Marylin's disposal so that they can continue their extraordinary work for the dozens of tots (and their families) who have become part of the Story Hour With Ellie and Marylin. Sessions are held twice-a-month, on Saturday mornings, starting at 10:15. The activities, although primarily literary in nature, also include music, art, oral communication and special celebrations that coincide with particular seasons and specific events (Halloween, Christmas/Hanukah, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Esater/Passover, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and end-of-season closing party).
The Laval Multicultural Library can be reached at 450-978-5995 or in person at the information desk, 1535 Chomedey Blvd.
