Stéphanie Dubois stopped in second round of Rogers Cup
The hunt for excellence at the 2007 Rogers Cup of Tennis in Toronto came to an abrupt end for Laval's Stéphanie Dubois as she fell to sixth-seeded Nadia Petrova 7-6 (tiebreaker), 2-6, 1-6. The tournament started on a promising note for Dubois as she downed Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 in a first round upset. The match against Petrova was a much different story, however, as the Russian, ranked 10th in the world, demolished the 115th ranked Dubois, after dropping the first set 6-7 (4) in a tie-breaker. Recovering from travel lag (she had been in a tournament in Los Angeles just prior to landing in Toronto where the Rogers Cup is being played), she came to life in the in the second and third sets to win going away. Two other Canadians, up-and-comers like Dubois, also lost second-round matches, with Blainville's Aleksandra Wozniak ousted by 13th seed Sybille Bammer and Repentigny's Marie-Eve Pelletier falling to No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic. The second-round action was all bad news for these three Quebecers representing Canada, unlike the first round when all three advanced, marking the first time since 1991 that three Canadians reached round 2.
