Problem over Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board's taxation invoices
This unidentified Laval taxpayer will be waiting for a correction on his school taxes, paid to the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board. The Board is presently reviewing all files and processing corrections where applicable. The problem of incorrect assessment is traced to the use of the 2009 rate, instead of a progressive application of the rate between 2007 and 2009. (Photo: Martin Alarie)

“The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board is aware that a problem occurred with the taxation invoices of some properties, mainly on the island of Laval,” says Director General Anne-Marie Lepage in an email received by Courrier Laval Weekly News on Friday, August 10.
Mrs. Lepage was responding to a request from Courrier Laval to the school board for comment regarding complaints from taxpayers that their taxes had been incorrectly assessed.

“The taxation year used to calculate the tax invoice was mistakenly the 2009 year instead of a progressive application of the rate between 2007 and 2009,” Mrs. Lepage explains, adding that the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board is currently in the process of reviewing all files and processing corrections where applicable.

The council of commissioners is expected to meet this coming week to address the issue.

In the meantime, says Laurier Board Communications Coordinator Maxeen Jolin, the school board is making every effort to correct the problem, with new invoices expected to be sent out in September. "Adjustments will be made to all incorrect invoices," Mrs. Jolin confirmed, reiterating that the extent of the problem is not yet known and that the priority is to correct the problem where necessary.
The role of school taxes
In her email, Director-General Lepage also provided the following information about school taxes: the taxation process is the same for English and French Boards; the taxation rate is the same in Laval for English and French Boards ($0.35); the school taxes are based on the municipal evaluation.

Mrs, Lepage invited all taxpayers to consult the Laurier Board website for more information on taxation, at www.swlaurier.qc.ca

“The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board wishes to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone,” Mrs. Lepage concludes.
