Toward a new year. Meet some members of the Chomedey Seniors Club, pictured here in early August of 2007, at registration day for the coming season. Sitting in front is Ashley Abramovitch, the young woman from Chomedey who represented Quebec at the Miss Teen Canada International 2008 pageant held in Toronto this past week. Ashley was at the gathering to accept a donation from the club, one of the many community groups and corporations that graciously sponsored her participation in the Miss Teen Canada International Scholarship Program.

The Chomedey Seniors Club launches its 24th year of service to Laval's English-speaking population
Blending traditional with original for enriching weekly adventures into educational, social, and cultural pursuits
"Join in, make some new friends, take up a new activity," says Dave Beiner, president of the Chomedey Seniors Club, one of Laval's longest-serving groups providing health-enhancing and quality-of-life improvement programs for the more mature members of the community.
"We've been around for nearly a quarter century, so we must be doing something right," says Mr. Beiner, who likes nothing better than to extol the virtues of friendship, companionship, camaraderie, entertainment, information and education, all of which, he says, "have been part of the Chomedey Seniors Club's mission since 1984."
Past traditions, new directions
Soon to begin heading in new directions following disassociation with Montreal's Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, the Chomedey Seniors Club will be putting more focus on local needs, say the organizers.
"Our programs will continue to be of the highest quality, our guest speakers will still be prominent experts, high-level professionals, and knowledgeable individuals from all walks of life, and our entertainers will be nothing but the best," says spokesperson Toby Banks, adding that all resources will be allocated for local activities and projects.
"Our program committee is hard at work compiling our 2007-2008 agenda and we're looking at several new ideas," Mrs. Banks adds.
"But one thing is sure, all funds raised by the club will be directly injected into the needs of members," specifies Mr. Beiner, "unlike previous practice when we were forwarding a good portion of our finances to the Cummings Centre without getting the services we thought we needed and should have gotten in return."
Mr. Beiner and Mrs. Banks tell Courrier Laval Weekly News that it's time to move on, and that's what the Chomedey Seniors Club will be doing, starting Thursday, September
6, 2007 with a Musical Entertainment Afternoon featuring the One-Man-Band - Anthony Antonacci - whose international repertoire has pleased many for many years.
There's only one other meeting scheduled for September, on Thursday the 20th, when McGill English Professor Paul Yachnin addresses the club on the topic of 'Shakespeare and the Jews'.
No meetings have been scheduled for September 13 (Rosh Hashana), or September 27 (Sukkot) so that members can spend this very important time with their families.
All meetings of the Chomedey Seniors Club take place at Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue, 1025 Elizabeth, in Chomedey, starting at 1:30 pm. Toby Banks, at (450) 688-7020, will be happy to provide more information.
