Steve Bletas resumes chairmanship of Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board's Council of Commissioners
Begins third straight mandate at helm of one of Quebec's largest territorial school boards
It took the new Council of Commissioners of the Laurier School Board very little time to elect its chairman, vice chair and executive committee that will, along with Couyncil, safeguard the pedagogical health and welfare of 38 schools, five adult ed centres, 15,000 students and nearly 2000 employees that make up this vast educational community that stretches from the Rivière des Prairies to Mont Laurier and counts within its territory many dozens of municipalities.
The election process was a rather mundane formality, and ironically it took more time to decide on procedural matters than it eventually did to name the commissioners who will occupy the chair, vice-chair, and membership on the executive committee. The chair of the executive committee will be elected at the group's first meeting.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Steve Bletas was endorsed as the Chairman for a third time. He will be seconded in his chair's duties by Carolyn Curiale, who begins her own third mandate as vice-chair..
The executive committee
The council needed hardly any time to determine which of its members would serve on the executive committee for a mandate which was set at two years. Added to the automatic membership of Chairman Bletas were: Mario Di Domenico, Robert Dixon, Nick Milas, Grace Nesi, Nancy Rupnik, and Ed Turchyniak. All executive committee members, save for Mario Di Domenico, are returnees. The sitting chairman at council dissolution in September was Ed Turchyniak.

Thus seven of the 14 members of the Partners For Success team will occupy places on the executive committee. Although nominated to the executive committee, independent commissioner Walter Fogel did enough secure enough support to obtain membership.

The committee reflects a 4-3 distribution in Laval-island and off-island representation with Steve Bletas, Mario Di Domenico, Nick Milas, and Grace Nesi representing Laval and Robert Dixon, Nancy Rupnik and Ed Turchyniak holding the fort for communities outside of Laval.

The chair of the executive committee will be elected by the committee members at the first meeting to be held on Tuesday, December 11.

The first regular meeting of the new Council of Commissioners of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board will take place on Wednesday, December 12, starting at 7:30 pm. All meetings of the Council of Commissioners are open to the public.

In its composition, the newly-elected Council of Commissioners features 14 members of Partners For Success (PFS), 2 members who carry the banner of the Partners Actively Committed to Education team (PACE), Mike Pizzola and Steve Mitchell, and three independents, Albina Pace, Steve Kmec, and Walter Fogel, all of whom represent Laval wards.

Correction
It was brought to our attention by Commissioner Walter Fogel that we erred in our comprehensive election report published in the Sunday, November 11 issue of Courrier Laval Bilingual Edition. In our introduction to the report, we wrote that the Partners For Success team had picked up 14 out of 19 seats, a drop of a single ward from 2003 results.

In fact, as Mr. Fogel so succinctly pointed out, the Partners For Success team was actually more successful than we gave them credit for, picking up two more seats than the the 12 (and not 15) they had won in 2003.

Courrier Laval Bilingual Edition regrets the error and thanks Commissioner Fogel for bringing it to our attention.
