In 2008, Laval property owners will have to pay, on average, 1.8% more in municipal taxes.
Even though the taxable property values will be higher, the increase will be limited due to a decrease of 12.2 cents per $100 of valuation. Last year, in order to contain the rise in basic property tax, the Vaillancourt administration opted to stretch the increase in the rate over three years. In 2008, the tax bills will be based on the second phase of the average increase of the basic rates.
Less than 2%
The owner of a single family dwelling evaluated at $209,000, with a taxable value of $187,701, will be billed for $2396, $36 more than last year, representing an increase of 1.6%. City officials indicate that about 55% of all owners of single family dwellings will

see their taxes increase by less than the 2% rate of inflation anticipated for 2008.
The basic rate of the special water tax for renewal of infrastructures stays at 35 cents per $100 evaluation. Rates for regular water tax, water treatment, regional public transit and snow removal have been frozen. The water tax rebate for those 65 and over will be maintained.
Fifteen-year perspective
Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt stated that “Since 1994, residential taxes have increased by only 11.1% compared with the general rate of inflation of 30% for the same period.”

In the non-residential sector, the average increase for 2008 will be 2%.
Access to property
The mayor also pointed out that the access to property program in eligible districts will be maintained. “To date more than 8,200 families have had access to this program which aims to help young families fulfill their dream of owning a home,” he said.

The home renovation program and the tree planting and trimming program have also been renewed for 2008.
Property taxes: for every $100 of evaluation

 Basic rate: 1.069 cents

 Six units and up: 1.158 cents

 Non-residential: 3.589 cents

 Serviced empty lots: 2.138 cents
