'The priorities are in the wrong place'
The leader of the PSC reacts to the budget
Mayor Vaillancourt's 2008 budget shows "nothing new" and "the priorities are in the wrong place" – says Robert Bordeleau, leader of the Parti au service du citoyen (PSC) and declared candidate for the 2009 municipal elections.
Reacting this past Wednesday to the city budget tabled Monday, Mr. Bordeleau is of the opinion the mayor cares little for the people. "He sees them only as taxpayers," he stated in a telephone interview.
According to the PSC leader, the city's priorities should be the homeless, who have had no shelter for the past two years, Laval residents who live below the poverty line, financial support for community organizations, the restoration of arenas in disrepair and the building of new ones, indoor swimming pools, and efficient snow removal in streets and on sidewalks.
Mr. Bordeleau also deplores the mayor's proposal to set up a $100 million reserve fund for the expansion of the Metro Orange Line that would complete the underground beltway between Montmorency and Côte Vertu stations. He believes that the $100 million 'kitty' would be insufficient to cover the costs of the proposed metro extension. "The city has other things to do besides being mesmerized by the metro," he says.
