The needy were not forgotten
The needy of Laval were in the hearts of many this past holiday season. In addition to the Laval Volunteer Centre, many other groups, including schools, participated in food drives and fund-raisers. Pictured are some of the volunteers who prepared breakfast for about 1000 people at the Laval Liberty/Laval Junior high schools Community Breakfast, an annual affair which raises funds for many community organizations, including AGAPE. Substitute teacher Rita Isopo, the smiling one at left, is no stranger to these events, having volunteered her services on several occasions in the past. Laval Volunteer Centre brought food and toys to Laval families
The Laval Volunteer Centre's 23rd annual Christmas Baskets Campaign brought some holiday cheer to about 5000 Laval residents, including 2133 children. More than 1600 deliveries were made possible by 550 volunteers on December 22. About 150 helped out at the Centre while 400 others, dressed as Santa's elves, took baskets and toys to Laval families.

The food and toys were collected throughout December in grocery stores, schools, businesses, community groups and sports associations. The drive brought in enough supplies to make possible the refurbishing of the Centre's food bank, with enough inventory to meet emergency needs for months to come, said director-general Kathleen Gagnon.

In 2006, the Laval Volunteer Centre provided food on a weekly basis to 51 community groups and 22 schools, all in Laval. The Centre is also a member of the Quebec Association of Food Banks. (H.M./J.F.)
