Boxer Antonin Décarie eyes North American title
Laval boxer Antonin Décarie has his eye on a North American middleweight (147 pounds) championship bout, a dream he'd like to see become reality in the next few months. Décarie, who is under GYM management, would like to follow in the footsteps of his training partners, Joachim Alcine and Jean Pascal, both of whom have achieved international acclaim in recent years.
"It should happen on February 9 or in April," the boxer revealed in an interview with Courrier Laval. The current Canadian Super Lightweight champion, Décarie has opted to move up in weight, fighting his last two matches in the heavier division.
"My muscular mass is growing and it's risky for me to fight at 140 pounds," said the 25-year-old, adding that he's fought at 146 pounds in preparation for moving up to the 147-pound class.
In his most recent fight, Décarie defeated Andres Pablo Villansane, for his 17th professional win, out-pointing the Argentinian 80-72 in a unanimous decision at the Montreal Casino Cabaret.
Unbeaten as a pro, the Laval boxer faced a stiff first-round challenge from the left-hitting Villansane who came into the fight with 14 wins, 4 losses and 3 no-decisions. "I was in too close at the start, and he took advantage by clinching. But I dominated the last seven rounds, keeping my distance and surprising him with punches he didn't expect. I took charge of the fight," he admitted. "I hate facing this kind of fighter. The big lefty moved around constantly. It was difficult to land punches because he was all over the ring. It wasn't a physical fight, but I'll have to get used to this kind of boxing style if I want to move up in the ranks," he added.
Inspired by Ti-Joa and Pascal
No doubt, Antonin Décarie derives inspiration from his friends, Joachim Alcine and Jean Pascal. "It was spectacular to see them marching toward the ring and watching them fight at the Bell Centre (December 7). It sure was inspiring. I want to eventually fight for a world title. I don't want to leave the world stage just to them, I too want to live that experience," he concluded, manifesting lots of hope in the future.
