A Cabaret, Marco Calliari style
Tunes that became popular classics, songs imbued with strains of anti-fascism, Neapolitan folklore, opera and lyrical arias, and pieces learned by heart from his parents – now, more than ever, in his new show, Marco Calliari brings back to life the great periods of Italian song from 1892 to 2000.
His second album, Mia Dolce Vita, takes us on a historical journey down memory lane, full of cross-mixing of musical styles. “With Mia Dolce Vita, I wanted to pay tribute to the songs that had inspired me from the start,” the Montreal singer explains.
Without a doubt, Calliari succeeded in choosing songs that constitute surprising rediscoveries of time-tested classics, adding new nuances of inspiration to the sounds of O Solo Mio, Caruso, Bella Ciao, or Cosa Nostra, the latter coming from the mythical Francis Ford Coppola Godfather trilogy. As well, he shares with us traditional choir singing in La Montanara, born in the Trentino district of Italy from where his father originated.
When not pushing his favourite opera excerpt Recitar, Marco Calliari brings to our attention the birth-promoting policies of the Mussolini era, with I Due Fannuloni, which can be literally translated as ‘The Two Good-For-Nothings’, referring to Mussolini and Hitler.
Fellini and Calliari
On stage, Calliari and his band of four musicians deliver music in an atmosphere of Italian night club kitch reminiscent of the 1960s, scenes which would be quite at home in the world of Fellini. Welcome to Marco’s Burlesque Show! In which he sometimes sings L’Italiano, other times <@Ri>L’Americano.
Backing the Italo-Quebecer crooner-rocker are Carlos Arraya (drums), Lysandre Champagne (trumpet), Frédéric Péloquin (accordion), and a musician to be announced (bass). This, a preview of the bigger orchestras that will attack the upcoming summer festivals throughout Quebec.
Marco Calliari brings his Italian music of today and yesteryear to the stage of the Théâtre des Muses de la Maison des Arts de Laval (1395, Concorde Boulevard West) at 8:00 pm, today, Sunday January 20, 2008. Information: (450) 667-2040.
