Jon Anderson: the fire still burns strong in Jon Anderson's musical soul
Singer who gave Yes its distinctive style makes stop in Laval on solo tour
Jon Anderson is known for the high-pitched voice that gave the Yes its reputation as the shining light of progressive rock. For the past five years, the musician has been on a world tour as a solo act.
Ten shows are scheduled for Quebec venues. After performing in Laval, Anderson will move on to Riviere-du-Loup, Gatineau and Drummondville.

"I didn't think I would be arriving in the ice age. I have fond memories of our shows here. On Yes's first visit, someone was running around waving the Quebec flag, which I borrowed to start waving it myself from the stage. The crowd went nuts. It was a nice way for us to experience our baptism with the people of Quebec," recounted the musician, in his hotel room in Old Montreal.

Jon Anderson is also know for his work with Vangelis and the personal search linked to the spirituality of the North American Indians. In this Tour of the Universe, the 64-year-old artist takes a trip through the various musical stages of his life, with 10 new songs. In addition to some revised arrangements of earlier works, the concert also includes stunning visuals developed specifically for the tour.
The repertoire
Apart from recent works such as Harmony, Father Sky, and >@Ri>White Buffalo <@$p>, Anderson brings with him some of the Yes classics such as Yours is no disgrace, Long distance runaround, Awaken, and Close to the edge. The singer also has intentions of having us savour tidbits of his collaborative work with Vangelis. To add to his unique voice, Anderson will be accompanied by guitar and piano.
"Even the most sophisticated music begins with a minimum of instrumental accompaniment. When I am solo on stage, I rise close to a dream-like state. I become so anchored in the moment that I sometimes feel I'm no longer me," he confided.
Across the generations
On March 26 in Montreal, the audience will be able to hear the results of stunning collaboration between Jon Anderson and students from the Paul Green School of Rock, which has 200 outlets throughout the United States. The rock legend has already met many young people, giving advice and performing with them in public. The grandfather still has plenty of fire in the belly and lots of energy in the voice.
"Despite my age, I'm happy to say that I've been able to maintain my voice in good shape. In addition to singing and whistling every day of the week, I've never overdone it on stage, even in the most intense days of Yes."
Yes, at 40
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of their coming together, the other members of Yes are quietly contemplating a world tour. It's already known that the son of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, Oliver, will replace his father in the group. "I saw Oliver again last week. He's just as good as his father. And to think, I remember him at 14, with his bass guitar, having difficulty seeing through his long hair," says the father of three (a boy, 2 girls), all of whom are involved in music.
A virtuoso who touched many musical styles, easily performing with symphony orchestras countless times, after having flirted with the New Age wave, embracing Latin rhythms and the well-calculated tubular symmetrical sounds of Yes, Jon Anderson is convinced he's had a hand in advancing the world of music, for the past three decades. "Not more, not less than others, my fellow brothers and sisters," he assured us.
Jon Anderson comes to Laval for a solo concert this coming Thursday, March 20, at 8:00 pm, at Salle André-Mathieu (475 de l'Avenir Blvd.) Information: (450) 667-2040.
