First Canadian at Baylor
Laval's Frederic Plesius is well-aware he'll have do ramp up his play, now that he's moving on to the Mecca of high-powered U.S. College Football, Texas, where he'll compete with hundreds of high-school recruits trying to make the Baylor University Bears. To boot, 90% of the Baylor team comes from Texas.
Why him? "It's unusual for them to recruit outside the state, and especially in Canada. It tells me something. They chose me for good reason. I think I'll get to play, otherwise they would have taken someone else from Texas," says Plesius, who's the first ever Canadian to be recruited by Baylor.
"I had to show them my athletic skills. I believe my good speed coupled with my imposing build made an impression on the Baylor recruiters. I run the 40-yard in 4.6 seconds," he adds.
When Baylor announced they had brought Plesius into the fold, head coach Art Briles explained why he had opted for a Canadian and not someone closer to home.
"We coached some Canadian players at the University of Houston, so we have a good relationship with these guys. Coming from Canada to the United States is a unique opportunity for these young men. They are very grateful, very humble student athletes to coach."
