15-year-old wins major prize for volunteer work with young children
In the presence of many dignitaries, including Chomedey MNA Guy Ouellette and Employment and Social Solidarity Minister Sam Hamad, Chomedey's Myrlinero Michel was recently honoured by the Quebec National Assembly for her exceptional volunteer work in the community, winning the Claude Masson Young Volunteer Prize.
The presentation to the local teenager was made at the Musée de l'Amérique française in Quebec City on April 30, within the framewok of the Prix Hommage bénévolat-Québec, an annual event which recognizes the work of volunteers and acknowledges their outstanding contributions to their communities.
A more humane society
"I want to congratulate Myrlinero Michel and the rest of these prize winners who deserve all our recognition because by their actions they demonstrate their devotion to our community and its flourishing," states MNA Guy Ouellette in a press release.
"In the name of all the citizens of our riding, I say thank you, thank you for all you do for us. You contribute to the building of a more humane and harmonious society and that honours you," declares Mr. Ouellette.
Helping children
Myrlinero Michel, 15, was recognized for her exceptional and concerted volunteer work with the Les petits déjeuners program at the Quatre-Vents school in Chomedey, a breakfast and nutrition initiative which provides plenty of good food for disadvantaged children of low income families. The program is a continuous activity which provides services to children throughout the school-year.
Significant contribution
The 11th edition of the Hommage bénévolat-Québec was held in conjunction with the festivities surrounding the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City. Both the government of Quebec and the Société du 400e anniversaire de Québec emphasized in a significant way the contribution of volunteers who took part in the organization and implementation of various activities.
Throughout Quebec, 38 winners were awarded the Prix Hommage bénévolat-Québec, in three categories: Young Volunteers – Claude Masson Prize (ages 14 to 30), Volunteers in Action (ages 31 and over) and Organization in Action. Each of the winners took home a Quebecois sculpture called TARED, a symbol of 'The Gift of Oneself'.
