Awesome August Attractions await members and friends of the Chomedey Seniors Club
Games, excursions, new registrations, a luncheon and Althea's world-renowned Annual Garden Party on agenda
August, month named for a Roman Emperor, and whose meaning is "…to inspire awe and admiration, in majestic ambience … for people who are venerable because of age …" – not unlike the members and friends of one of Chomedey's oldest and most faithful organizations of service to seniors in Chomedey.
Quite appropriate too, as a description of this month's ensemble of the five activities planned by the Program Committee to help chase away the other side of the story – the dogs days of August.
The committee, you should know, is made up of a handful of movers and shakers who know no other way of enhancing the lives of people than by offering them meaningful social-cultural experiences. Does the formula work? You bet! Judging by the large turnouts of members and friends who flock to gatherings week in and week out, enjoying a variety of activities to suit many tastes.
Here we come
Looking for a little innocent gambling fun? Show up at Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue this coming Thursday, August 7, at 1:30 pm, for an afternoon of Bingo, Poker, Bridge, and Board Games. No charge, say the organizers.
Party Time!
Have you had the pleasure and privilege of savouring one of Althea Seaman's Summer Garden Parties? If you have, you know what's in store on August 14th, starting at noon. And if you haven't yet had the distinct pleasure, you and returnees as well, are in for a brand-new treat because Althea never does the same thing the same way twice, bless her generous soul and huge talent for putting together a grand celebration, a party both traditional and refreshingly fresh.
"Just bring your good humour, your party attitude, and your openness to having a good time with friends and we guarantee you will have a wonderful time," says Tille Borenheim, one of the four people responsible for the club's August Program.
Don't be late, the fun starts at noon, with Pizza, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks, for just $8 per person (paid in advance). "And the party is on, rain or shine!" insists the affable Althea by way of invitation to members and friends of the Chomedey Seniors Club, to her home at 936, 100th Avenue, in Chomedey. Need more information? Call Althea, at (450) 687-2176.
!000 Islands
Just three days later, on August 17, the 'show' goes on the road as members and friends embark on a trip to 1000 Islands, where a 2 ½ hour boat ride and a visit to to the Casino awaits them. Departure is at 8:00 am, from Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue, 1025 Elizabeth, in Chomedey.
Transportation to 1000 Islands is $35, the boat cruise is $12, visit to the Casino included.
"It's great fun, and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day with friends," says Lil Achtman, another member of the quartet responsible for organizing the August Program.
On to business
Mark down Thursday, August 21 on your calendars if you have an interest in signing up for a new season of activities, workshops, exceptional guests, and special projects, all of which are in the planning for 2008-2009 as the Chomedey Seniors Club launches its 25th year of service to the people of Chomedey and Laval.
"You'll be delighted with the many things we have planned for our Silver Anniversary," says Toby Banks, contact person and information coordinator for the Club.
"And the price is right," adds Isaac Banks, who together with Tillie Borenheim, Lil Achtman, and the love of his life, Toby (Banks), put together the August Program. The price of a year's membership, by the way, is $25. Registrations will be taken from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. If paying by check or money order, payable to The Chomedey Seniors Club.
"Come and see us. Spend a little time with new friends, bring your suggestions, and stay a while for delicious refreshments," say in unison, all four members of the August Program Committee.
Good-bye August
Members and friends can cap off August with a Closing Luncheon on Thursday, August 28, at Au Vieux Duluth (St-Martin Blvd at Industrial Blvd.), starting at noon. Registration is required in advance, and a meal choice must be made from a menu available when registering. Cost is $10, with taxes and gratuities subsidized by the Club.
