In his Signatures Exhibit, photographer Martin Alarie showcases 26 of his best pictures from shows at the Salle André-Mathieu Concert Hall. Always the boyish clown himself, a quality that goes a long way toward preserving his sanity, he says, he's pictured here mimicking one of his favourite subjects – Sol, the clown-poet created by Marc Favreau and captured by Martin Alarie's eye and camera. Signatures exhibit shows the passion of a heart's perceptive eye
"It all started here, at Salle André-Mathieu … and it's here that it continues to roll … with love." This is the message from Gregory Charles, inscribed on his picture, affixed to the wall at the renowned Laval concert hall. The words could also have been a suitable introduction to the exhibit of which the picture is a part - Signatures, by photographer Martin Alarie.
In this 2004-2008 retrospective, the staff photographer for Courrier Laval showcases 26 of his best pictures, shot at events featuring artists of many sorts. Many of these pictures, like that of Gregory Charles, are signed by the artist pictured.

Onlookers cannot help but stop at the photographer's favourite picture of the collection: Sol in Deep Contemplation. The image is of the clown-poet created by Marc Favreau, captured by the camera on his last visit to Laval.

Martin Alarie also had an eye for the energy exuded by an impressive Michel Fugain, the grace of an Isabelle Boulay, the professionalism of Claude Dubois, the bubbliness of an Alain Lefebvre, and the hilarious high spirits of a Rachil Badouri.

"He's the most difficult to shoot, he makes me laugh so hard. I have to stop listening to him, as I have to do with the others, they are so good that they could keep me there right to the end of their shows, but my work forces me to be in many places within short periods of time – another show, a football game, a fire," the photographer confides, rather gingerly as he finds himself in the rare position of being the object of another photographer's camera, during the interview for this report.
Smitten by technology
The photographer uses mostly a Nikon – D3 camera to capture the emotion of the Michel Rivards, Jean-Pierre Ferlands and Fred Pellerins, or the mimicry of Clemence Desrochers, Bob Walsh and Adamo. His newest baby: a giant 200-400 F4 Lens. "It's incredible, what technology has brought to photography. In just four years, the quality has improved beyond belief. And you always have to be on the lookout for more technological changes just to keep up!
"But the challenge hasn’t changed. You still have to adapt and adjust to each performer, without neglecting the sets and lights that go with the show. It's the reason why I foster good relations with the technicians working at the hall. You also have to find the best vantage points without conspicuously parading in the concert hall. People don't pay good money to hear the 'clic-clics' of your camera over their shoulders. I understand and appreciate their sentiments."
Great moments
Starting his career as a photojournalist in January of 2004, Martin Alarie says he's already been marked by several events and incidences he's had to cover on Laval island: the hysterics of the audience at the Cowboy Frigants/Robert Charlebois Concert at Mondial Choral 2006; the emotional funeral services for slain Laval Police Constable Valerie Gignac (December 2005); the Vincent-Massey Street fire in Chomedey, when rescue workers had to try to revive victims within full view of his lens (May 2008); an exclusive photo shoot with members of Simple Plan, in their dressing room, just before their benefit concert for the Cité de la Santé Foundation (September 2006).
Also among his most precious memories is a trip to Green Bay (October 2007) with Laval firefighters, to watch the Packers play the Chicago Bears in an NFL game at venerable Lambeau Field; and his assignment to cover Gilles Proulx, whose music he has listened to for many years.

"I also have to mention the 18 helicopter flights I go on each year, for one of my specialties – aerial photography. And of course, there was the Metro … the little kid who used to collect model trains found himself in the tunnels, to record for posterity the building of the Laval subway extension. What a thrill!"
Wishes and regrets
If he regrets missed opportunities, the photographer wishes he had taken pictures of George Thurston and Gaston Mandeville. But what's done is done, he says, so he's now trained his sights (and lens) on the likes of Céline Dion, U2 and the Olympic Games, as future challenges and dreams.
Guaranteed smiles
For anyone who meets up with Martin Alarie at work (or at play, sometimes), a smile and a good word is a guarantee. "My work, it's an amusement park! I love to put people at ease. It's the quality of the picture that's at stake. It's the important thing," he explains, just before gulping down his coffee and rushing back on the road in search of the next assignment, and the pictures that will record the event for posterity.
The Signatures Exhibit of photographer Martin Alarie is on display until Friday, September 5, in the foyer of Salle André-Mathieu (475, boulevard de l'Avenir), Monday to Saturday, noon to 8:00 pm. Information: (450) 667-2040.
