Francine Bellerose
The candidate
Francine Bellerose, Québéc solidaire candidate in Chomedey, has been involved in the party since its birth. In 2007, she finished a distant fourth behind the Liberals, ADQ, and PQ, collecting 700 votes (2%). Now 65, she's lived in Chomedey for about a dozen years. She holds a Master's Degree in Political Science from UQAM, specializing in problems of African development and under-development. She's spent her entire career as a financial counselor. Now retired, she continues to work part-time as an insurance broker. Politically, she's also been involved in the Parti québécois, working with the party in the 1970s before becoming political attaché to the party's candidate in Berthier (Lanaudière) in the 1981 election. She says she's not "at home any more in the PQ", which she finds has moved "too far to the right". She is a member of Attac-Quebec and of Option citoyenne. Responsible for economic, fiscal, and poverty issues for QS, she's largely contributed to the socio-economic planks of the electoral platform proposed by the political movement led by Françoise David and Amir Khadir.
What are the issues in the riding?
The candidate deplores the "anarchy of urban development" in Laval, notably the major traffic arteries and the numerous real estate projects. She's opposed to the extension of Autoroute 25 in the east, and the exploitation of wetlands by developers.
