There's lots of sunshine and warmth at the Chomedey Seniors Club
There's more than just great speakers, fabulous entertainment, and health nurturing workshops at the Chomedey Seniors Club. Pictured are most of the members of the group's Line Dancing Class that takes place Tuesday mornings at Young Israel Synagogue. This past Tuesday, they braved the first snowfall of the year to get together at Kirin's Restaurant for their annual luncheon. (Photo: Martin Alarie)

In these deep and dark December kinds of days members and friends share time and place
Lord, Teach us to pray … In these deep and dark December kinds of days … read the opening lyrics of a song I heard decades ago.
And how does one pray, you may ask? The song, as I recall it, says … Lord, show us the way …

Well, it doesn't take too much thought to come to the conclusion that the Lord has indeed shown the way for the Program Committee of the Chomedey Seniors Club, one of Laval's longest-standing (now in its 25th year) organizations, that every Thursday of practically every week of the year does a phenomenal job of ministering to the needs of those of us who have reached our so-called golden years.
Is it prayer?
"Oh, sure! Bbut it's in the form of a whole lot of fun without putting on weight says Toby Banks, Program Coordinator, commenting on her work and that of others of the committee who do such a splendid job of making every meeting of the group an afternoon to remember.
"We do it for the benefit and satisfaction it brings to others and for the good feeling it creates in everyone who participates. But we (the committee) don't do it alone and we're always respectful of the needs and interests of the members of the group to whom we go for advice and suggestions concerning speakers, workshops activities, events, and excursions," Mrs. Banks explains.

So there you have it, as good a summary of the rhyme and reason for the services provided by the Chomedey Seniors Club to about 140 members, friends and guests who gather weekly at the Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue.
The December program
Following a November whose meetings focused on health, well-being, entertainment and literature, December brings to the Chomedey Seniors Club three events which are light of heart and full of the spirit of the season, kicking off with an afternoon with guitarist-singer Elisabeth Prescesky (Thursday, December 4), an another afternoon with the screening of one of the great movies the club is so noted for bringing to Chomedey (Thursday, December 11), capped off on Thursday, December 18 with the annual Chanukah Party featuring the ample talent of Yaacov Sassi who'll treat everyone to his extensive and pleasing repertoire of Jewish and international songs, songs of the heart that you can, and will be expected to, sing along with.
Don't miss it, it promises to be another wonderfully memorable celebration of the festival of lights, and a wonderful reminder that <@Ri>hanukka>>@$p> in Hebrew denotes dedication to G_d, and if I may add, to neighbour, and is this not what the Chomedey Seniors Club is all about?

On Thursday, December 25, Christmas Day 2008, the club takes a breather so that members and friends of the Christian faith can spend time with their families.
There's more
So ends the month, but that’s not all there is. “Join us every Tuesday morning for lively line dancing taught and led by an experienced teacher who gets everyone up and stepping smartly to upbeat music which puts a spring in our step,” says Mrs. Banks, whose program committee is already hard at work lining up some more fascinating workshops, lectures, guest speakers and fabulous entertainers for January 2009 and beyond.
The Chomedey Seniors Club holds regular weekly meetings on Thursdays, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, at Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue, 1025 Elizabeth, in Chomedey, just a short walk north of Notre-Dame Blvd. The Tuesday Line Dancing Classes are held from 10:00 am to 11:30 pm, also at Young Israel Synagogue. There is no charge for members for these classes.
