Re-elected in Laval-des-Rapides, Alain Paquet disappointed over voter apathy
Wins third mandate with slightly-reduced margin
With his vote share rising to 43.64% from 34.41% in 2007, Alain Paquet carried Laval-des-Rapides for a third time since 2003, even though his vote margin was reduced by 207 (1,494 in 2007 - 1,287 in 2008).
Mr. Paquet's reelection came from 11,551 supporters who came out to vote for him. "I'm happy with the confidence shown in me once again," said the Liberal MNA who also occupies the post of President of the Public Finances Commission.
"We're back to 2003 (and 2007) in Liberal representation of Laval," said the Mr. Paquet, who deplored the poor voter turn-out. "I think it's very important that we can vote with a pencil and not with a gun here. It's a shame," he specified, referring to voter disinterest.
PQ up, ADQ down
For the PQ's Marc Demers, this was a better situation than in 2007, as he improved his total to 10,264, an increase of 216, from the 10,048, with his vote share climbing to 38.78% from 2007's 29.97%.
For the ADQ, Laval-des-Rapides mirrored many of the other ridings of the island and the province, where candidates were pushed into third place and quite far behind second-place PQ opponents. From the 9,344 (27.89%) votes picked up in 2007, ADQ candidate Robert Goulet fell to 2,727 (10.30%) in 2008.
Disappointment
Consistent with voter apathy across Quebec, Laval-des-Rapides electors stayed away in droves, with the turnout falling to 54.99% from 2007's 69.67%. "The turn-out shows that people were not pleased with this election. The low-level credibility of politicians was further eroded. But at least we proved that the Parti québécois is alive and well in Laval-des-Rapides," said Marc Demers.
The others
There was a significant gap between major parties and others in Laval-des-Rapides, with Nicholas Sarrazin of the Green Party of Quebec pulling in 779 votes (2.94%), Sylvie Des Rochers of Québec solidaire 758 (2.86%), Mathieu Desbiens of the Parti indépendantiste 151 (1.57%), Independent Jacques Frigon 125 (0.47%), and Yvon Breton of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Quebec bringing up the rear with 114 (0.43%).
