Crime in the metro: the police has a plan of action
What can Laval expect for the metro relative to criminal acts which might accompany the opening of the three new stations on the island.? That's a question to be answered by the Laval Police Department. Some measures have been in place for some time, say the police.
"We know there will be police presence in the metro on this side of Rivière des Prairies. We consulted the Montreal Police Department for statistics on criminal acts in the 65 stations in the rest of the metro system. This information proved useful in helping us set up a plan of action," explained Laval Police Chief Jean-Pierre Gariépy.

It was conclude from the statistics that the least likely place for criminal activities is the metro trains. The criminal incidents occur mostly in the stations and their immediate surroundings.

Director Gariépy and his team will keep a close watch on the shifting of problematic young people from the Henri-Bourassa Station (previously serving as the convergence of the Laval - STL and Montreal STM transit systems) toward the new Laval stations. Police officials expect that the Cartier Station will attract the same type of criminal element as its counterpart on the other side of the river.

As for the Concorde Station, a spot through which suburban train commuters will link up with the metro into Montreal, there is little concern for potential criminal incidents since most of the people movement occurs at rush-hour, a time of day when criminal acts are less frequent.
More police presence in south-central Laval
The opening of the three Laval stations will necessitate a redeployment of some police officers, although there is no plan to assign specific officers to specific stations.

"We foresaw the need. In the last three years, 45 new police officers were added to the force. The last detail of 15 officers will be put in place by opening date of the metro. These additional resources will be on duty in and around the neighbourhoods of the new stations," Mr. Gariépy emphasized. As a result of this measure, these police officers will patrol the south-central part of Laval island.
