Chomedey's Cathy Axais to perform in Montreal production of Grease
Born and raised in Laval and a graduate of Western Laval High School (Class of 2001), Cathy joined a company of 25 other talented singers, dancers, and actors in a production that will run for two nights at the D.B. Clarke Theatre in Montreal Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20.
Dancing in the soul
"I've been dancing since the age of four, and I'm just thrilled to be part of this production of Grease," Cathy told Courrier Laval Weekly News in a telephone interview. "I've been dancing with the Studio A School of Dance for many years and I think this opportunity to perform in the Camp Broadway production of Grease is an exciting way of making a dream come true," said the Chomedey resident who now teaches at Studio A.
"I love many types of dance, including ballet, jazz ballet and urban jazz but I especially love hip hop," said the McGill University student presently studying Software Engineering and Business Management. "Cathy has always had a powerful passion for the arts, specifically the art of dance," said Christiane Jean, spokesperson for the 'Broadway Workshop', a school for Voice, Dance and Theatre, and the producers of the Camp Broadway version of Grease.
"I've really enjoyed dancing competitively in many hip hop contests that take place in places like Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York," explained the affable young woman who has also spent many wonderful hours also performing with Greek and Macedonian folkloric groups. Her artistic spirit and search for excellence has led her to perform in hip hop contests in Toronto (International Power Dance), New Jersey (Bravo!) and Quevec City (Showtime Nationals), to name just a few. The Studio A Dance Company, of which she is a part, has also performed at the World Hip Hop Championships in Los Angeles and in competitions in Germany. In and around Montreal, Cathy and her dance school have made numerous appearances, counting the Just For Laughs Festival as one their more prominent venues.
From Western Laval into Grease
"I auditioned for Grease because I wanted to perfect my craft, and so far it's been a wonderful opportunity for me to combine singing, acting, and dancing," said the down-to-earth performer who has very fond memories of participating in and helping to produce several Talent Shows at Western Laval High School (now renamed Laval Liberty High School).

"I had a good time at those shows. I learned a lot and I got to perform on stage for family and friends. The positive feedback I got from teachers and friends inspired me to continue to pursue my dreams, and eventually my experiences both at school and at the dance studio led me to take the plunge into the world of Broadway," Cathy said with pride, adding that she hopes the future will bring more such incredible opportunities for her and others like her.
The musical
Grease, flowing out of the creatively fertile minds of Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey in 1971, was first performed in early 1972 in Manhattan. It opened later that summer as a Broadway production, running at the Broadhurst and Royale Theatre for a total of 3388 performances. It was internationally popularized when director Randal Kleiser brought it to the big screen with actors John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the leads.
The story takes places at and around Rydell High in Chicago, and follows a group of teenagers, The Pink Ladies and The Burger Palace Boys. Pink dresses, leather jackets, squabbles, fights, friendship, love, rebellion and reconciliation – all of it can be found in this musical depicting 1950’s teen culture in America.

Choreographed and directed by Mélanie Martin alongside artistic and musical director Christiane Jean, the Camp Broadway production of Grease will be performed by 25 young artists from the Montreal area. They’ll put on their dancing shoes, show off their acting skills and sing their hearts out to songs such as the unforgettable ‘We Got Together’ and ‘Greased Lightning’.

The Camp Broadway company started out 2 years ago, presenting excepts of Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Starmania. Last year the company went into double production presenting Pied de Poule, a popular 80’s Quebec musical and The Wizard of Oz.

This year Camp Broadway is taking on a bigger production with a bigger cast and aims to reach a bigger audience for Grease and for other shows to come in the future.

"The Saturday, October 20 show is pretty much already sold out, but there are some tickets left for the Friday performance, so why not come and take a look at an exhilarating show put on by a company of multitalented individuals; you'll love it!" said Cathy Axais, concluding that she would be thrilled to see some of her old and new friends from Chomedey and Laval at the show.
