Coliforms
The Courrier Laval investigation
> Starting point: a CRE Laval report tabled in autumn of 2001
Sector targeted: Saint-François east, from rue Claude to the tip of the island
The objective of the analysis: wastewater flowing from 10 pipes situated on the banks of the Rivière des Mille Îles.
Date samples were taken: September 18, 2007
Results of analysis: waste water from 7 out of the 10 pipes examined was shown to contain in excess of 60,000 fecal coliforms per 100 ml measured; (the laboratory does not measure beyond this point)
Maximum coliform level at which direct contact with the water must be avoided: 1,000 per 100 ml
Types of installations found in the district:
. Advanced Secondary Treatment Systems: maximum level of 50,000 coliforms
. Standard-sand filter bed: no set norms for waste water coliform content
All pipes must be submerged in water, to dilute contaminants, as stipulated by provincial regulations. None of the pipes examined were shown to respect these stipulations
The analysis was conducted by Maxxam Analytique inc., a laboratory certified by Quebec's Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks (MDDEP).
