Students recognized by educators and Ministry of Education for achieving 100%
This coming Thursday, November 29, The Provincial Association of Social Studies Teachers (PASST) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sport (MELS) will hold its annual Awards Ceremony honouring students and teachers for their high level of achievement on the June 2007 History of Quebec and Canada Ministry Examination.
"Now in its seventh year, this annual celebration of academic excellence attained by teachers and students of the Anglophone Community will gather about 1000 people at the Palais des Congres, as parents, friends, and invited guests publicly acknowledge the exceptional achievements of close to 300 young people who attend English public and private schools throughout Quebec," PASST president Jerry Cohen told Courrier Laval.

The students will be awarded their certificates by Mr. Leo La France, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education.

"Without a doubt, there is not enough of this kind of public acknowledgement of teacher and student achievement and academic excellence," says Mr. Cohen, a veteran educator of both the private and public sector who now teaches History of Quebec and Canada, (among other disciplines) for the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board at Phoenix High School in Laval.
Broad representation

Of the 252 students who will be in attendance at the ceremony (out of 292 who were eligible), 140 achieved their 100% in public schools, with the rest, at 112 coming from the private sector. Notably, 24 of the students who chose to attend the ceremony will be getting French certificates, reflecting the fact that they took the course in French in an English school.

Eight of Quebec's nine English school boards will be represented by student honourees, coming from 47 different schools. Students from 24 private schools will also be in attendance.
