Stephanie Dubois ends season on high note
Dubois lost the finals to American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 7-6 (6). “I made a few too many errors in the first set. Ashley played really well. At the end of the match we were both very tired,” she admitted.

“I came back in the second set and was leading 5-3. I was even leading in the tiebreaker. I had my chances,” she told Courrier Laval in a telephone interview.

Dubois reached the finals of the tournament with a semi-final win over Germany’s Angelika Bachmann 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, after she had beaten Maria-Fernanda Alves of Brazil 6-3, 6-2 and American Mashona Washington 6-0, 6-3. The Laval native got a free pass into the second round when rival Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina left the court with a knee injury. At the time, Dubois was leading 6-5 in the first set.
Sliding in the rankings
Despite reaching the finals in California, Dubois did not crack the top 100 in women’s world tennis rankings (WTA) in 2007, dropping to 103rd spot from 101st, picking up 334 points in 29 tournaments.

“Last year I won my last two tournaments. I would have had to do the same to end up in the top 100 in 2007,” she pointed out. “But at least I recovered from a poor start and finished the year on a strong note. Lately, I’ve playing against girls ranked quite high and held my own with them, playing some very good matches. I reached the objectives I set for myself."

The 21-year-old did not hide the fact that her objective was to reach the competitive round (main draw) of the Australian Open which is held in January. “I should get an answer soon. It would be a nice Christmas present. It would be a god way to start 2008.”

Dubois will be back on the tennis court in January in Australia where she’ll take part in some tournaments before, hopefully, playing in the big one – the Australian Open, the first of the four grand slam events of 2008. “I think I’ll have qualified for the first round (main draw) of the tournament.”
