An honourable defeat against the best in the country
Montmorency Women's Basketball does proud against Team Canada
The unbeaten streak of the Montmorency Nomades Women's Basketball team ended at 12 on February 8, virtue of a loss to the Canadian National Junior Team.
But there was no shame in this defeat as the local girls were beaten but certainly not outclassed, 68-54, in this friendly match against the best in the country.
Although the game did not have an impact on the Collegiate AAA standings, Montmorency showed plenty of character, with a superb effort which had them ahead 27-24 at the half.
"I'm very satisfied with the team's performance. The girls proved they can compete with the best in Canada. They gave it all they had. There was good execution," said Nomades coach Martin Gagnon.
"It was the first time we faced a taller and bigger team. They also flashed lots of speed," he emphasized.
The Montmorency attack was led by Hélène Bibeau and Vanessa Ledoux, who scored nine and eight points respectively.
A little stressed before the match, coach Gagnon did not hide his fear of seeing one of his players injured. But his fears turned out to be unfounded, as by his own admission the girls were in impeccable physical condition. "The girls had plenty of massaging (muscle toning) and lots of rest before the game," the coach specified.
