Concert features two conductors
The LSO welcomes François Dompierre
Alain Trudel, conductor of the Laval Symphony Orchestra, and François Dompierre, a well known Quebec composer have often collaborated in studio. With their upcoming show Dompierre: ses plus belles musiques, the two men have decided to bring their delightful collaborations to the stage.
"Dompierre will use all his talents as a composer, pianist, and director. François knows how to communicate with his audience," said project starter Alain Trudel. Throughout the evening, Dompierre and Trudel will switch roles, one directing the other. Expect to see the conductor of the LSO take a go at his trombone, and Dompierre in turn will take a seat at the piano.

"We'll chat with the audience about our music and recount a few funny anecdotes," said Dompierre. The composer has worked with the likes of Denys Arcand, Michel Brault, Francis Mankiewicz, Claude Miller and Claude Chabrol.
Trombone Concerto
On top of offering up some movie soundtracks (Les Portes tournantes, l'Odyssée d'Alice Tremblay) and an extract from his Symphonie imaginaire, François Dompierre is working slowly on a concerto for the trombone for Alain Trudel to play. For the grand world premiere, the Laval public will hear the second and third movements of the piece.
"There is a very lyrical side of the trombone that we don't often hear," he said. Dompierre is one of the first to make classical music more accessible to Quebec. He brought orchestras into the metro and Bach concertos into night clubs.

He has always had the goal of rendering classical music "to the front step of the most people possible, without losing any level of quality." His piece Les Glorieux was a daring order by Kent Nagano of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and was a great success. "Orchestra is in a state of revival! Everywhere you look, schools are creating grand ensembles, harmonies, with a concentration on the music."
Stravinski
All the pieces in the program are composition and arrangements by François Dompierre, with the exception of The Firebird from Igor Stravinski that he chose. "Because it's a musical program full of images, ones that I love and practice myself. Stravinski is the prototype of a grand classical composer who charmed audiences with modernisms.
For the prelude, the students from l'école Poly-Jeunesse, under the direction of Manon Reddy, will offer up the kind of show that garnered them many prizes on the North-American music scene.@D:The Laval Symphony Orchestra presents the concert

Dompierre: ses plus belles musiques on April 2nd, at 8 p.m. in the Salle André-Mathieu (475, boul. de l'Avenir). Information: 450-667-2040.
