Annual angling festival returns to the Centre de la Nature de Laval
Amateur anglers who'd like to cast their lines for some wiggly ones haven't too far to go this coming Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 17, 18, 19 as the annual fishing festival returns to Laval's Centre de la Nature.
Now in its 12th year the festival, which takes place as part of Quebec Families Week, has as its goal initiation and familiarization with the sport of fishing. "The lake will be stocked with $30,000 worth of fish (10,000 trout)," says Pierre Creamer of the Centre de la Nature Foundation.
Open to all without charge, the event is expected to draw at least the same number of participants as last year – 10,000, according to the organizers. On site will be information booths, evisceration facilities, rental of equipment services, and locations where anglers can procure bait for their fishing rods.
Saturday, May 17 has been set aside for the participation of 1000 youngsters in a day of fishing initiation. The day, called Anglers-in-the Making, will offer children ages 9 to 12 the opportunity to leave with a certificate the equivalent of a fishing permit valid until age 18. Each participant will also leave with a fishing kit for beginners.
Started by the Quebec Fauna Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife, this initiation-to-fishing project has attracted 110,000 youngsters since its debut a decade ago. "The aim of this 'Fishing in the City' project is to attract new anglers and to introduce citizens to the practice," explains Mr. Creamer.
People of reduced mobility are also welcome but must register with the Laval Regional Association of Handicapped Persons, at (450) 668-2354.
To ensure the proper unfolding of the festival, a large number of volunteers, two lifeguards, and employees of the city and the Foundation will on hand.
The festival, inaugurated 12 years ago by the now-dissolved Hunting and Fishing Association of the Employees of Laval, is today made possible through collaboration between the Centre de la Nature Foundation, the city of Laval and various partners. Each participant can end the day with a maximum of five catches.
