Renowned athletes expected to give youngsters expert advice and strong motivation
Paul Stephens has been around basketball bailiwicks for quite a while, in many capacities: high school player, Cegep star, semi-pro performer, and high school coach. But without a doubt, his main passion is teaching the game to young people, both boys and girls, especially at his annual summer camps.
In the past four years, coach Stephens, who also teaches in a local high school, has gathered hundreds of young basketballers for a two-week camp that provides a wealth of theory, practice, and motivation that will serve these boys and girls well throughout life, even if they do not pursue careers in the sport.

"It's a great opportunity for me to give back some of the good that was transmitted to me in my growing years," says the coach, whose connection in the basketball and sports world range from the Philadelphia 76ers Samuel Dalembert and the Miami Heat's Joel Anthony, hockey's Eric Perrin of the Atlanta Thrashers, football's Danny Dortelus of the Alouettes, and Olympian Nicolas Macrozonaris.
Respect and appreciation
How far does the influence of Coach Stephens go with these prominent athletes? And how much respect do they have for his efforts to teach the young? Far enough to draw them all to his 2008 basketball camp this coming June and July.
"I'm truly gratified by their response. Event though they are long-time close friends and acquaintances, I'm still awed by the fact that they would take time from their busy schedules to share their insights with young people who need guidance, leadership and positive role models. And I don't think you can do any better than these fine people for setting a good example for the young," sums up the coach.
The camp
The Fifth Annual NIVA Basketball Camp will take place at Laurier Senior High School, 2323 Daniel Johnson Blvd., in Chomedey, in two stages: June 23 to 27, and June 30 to July 4. Open to boys and girls ages 6 to 16, the sessions are held in both of Canada's official languages, with French instruction in the morning and English in the afternoon.
