Three generations of elation
On the 29th day of June, in 2008, the star of Spain rose to the top of the European Soccer firmament, and what better way to celebrate than joining together in an expression of solidarity with those whose heroes led Espana to the top of the world. Pictured are some Laval residents whose happiness over the Spanish victory is quite evident in their million-dollar smiles. Left to right, they are: Tasha ('El pooch'), Janice, 'Abuelo', Dannelle, Dorothy, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Andrew, Tirzah, Andres, and Matthew. As for the beloved 'Abuelo', he had waited a long time to see his Spanish heroes finally come through with victory, having tasted the thrill of national soccer pride only once, in 1964, when Spain last won the Euro Cup. "It was special, very special, it truly gladdened my heart," said he, who is 88 years young. (Photo:Courtesy of Elizabeth Buenacasa)
Three generations of elation
Grandfather, father, and children rejoiced in Spanish victory
It was a joyous time for our Abuelo to see his "Red Fury" finally win after such a long drought.
The last time Spain won the Euro Cup Championship was four years after he immigrated to Canada. Too bad he never got to experience the thrill of victory in his native land. Nevertheless he had fun with us here, and we honked all the way home after watching the game with friends!

A quiet man by his own admission, he seemed to be relishing the noise of the honking horns that could be heard throughout Chomedey.

My dad was 10 when Spain won the Euro in '64. The day before his passing, was the day Spain beat Italy in the quarter final. I came to him and told him "Daddy, Spain won!" 'Good!' he whispered. The smile on his face said it all.

Though he wasn't with us to celebrate the final victory, no doubt he had a front row seat in heaven. I think the thunderstorm following the game was just a little glimpse of the party in heaven that day, because for that brief moment in eternity, everyone was Spanish, and proud of it! (E.B.)
