Five Laval teams win gold in first phase of Laval's International Cup of Soccer
Keen competition and some close games characterize play at 22nd edition of popular tournament
The first phase of the 22nd annual Laval International Cup of Soccer which ended June 29, was marked by elevated standards of play and close matches. Only five Laval teams came away with champions' trophies.
While millions of soccer fans across the world were watching Spain defeat Germany for the 2008 Euro Cup, thousands of others went out to support their local teams at the Competence 2000 and Horizon-Jeunesse fields.

In the girls division, only one team came away with gold, the Monteuil Magics who blanked the Varennes Blitz 2-0 en route to the top rung of the podium, in U-12 AA competition.

In the boys division, the Fabrose Coyotes had an easier time of it in U-9 Class AA action, overwhelming the Étoiles de l'Est 5-1. In U-10 Class A, Laval Centre South Express beat Fabrose Fusion 5-3, while in U-14 Class A, Étoiles de L'Est were taken to the limit in a 1-0 squeaker over the Laplaine Hackers. L'Express Laval Centre South also squeaked out a 1-0 win over the Monteuil Hurricanes in the U-13, Class AA final.
Ontario teams shine
Ontario teams largely dominated the first phase of the competition, winning five championships, led by the girls who took four of the gold medals. In U-11 Class AA, the Mississauga North Panthers blanked the Erin Mills Eagles 3-0. In U-15 Class AA action Erin Mills turned the tide with a 2-1 over the Boucherville Express. In U-16 Class AA competition, Ottawa edged the Victoriaville Optimum 3-2.
The Adidas Cup
In the Fifth Annual Adidas Cup, reserved for senior teams, Ontario again took top honours as the Scarborough Strikers beat Royun Noranda 2-0 in men's division, with Ottawa edging Des Laurentides 2-1 in women's U-18 AAA action. Winning teams took home $1,500 and runners-up $500.
More winners
The Pierrefonds Cobras (Girls U-16 Class A), the Marinières d'Aylmer (Girls U-12 Class A), the Drummondville Dragons (Boys U-14 Class AA) and the Victoriaville Optimum (men's U-18 Class AA) all won gold.
Laval finalists
The Chomedey Dynamo took silver, losing to Blainville in Boys U-9 Class A play, while in Boys U-13 Class A action Laval Centre South also took silver, edged 2-1 by Boisbriand in the finals.
