"Calvillo believes in me"
Laval's Danny Desriveaux shines for the Alouettes
As time passes, things look better and better for Laval's Danny Desriveaux, pass receiver for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
In the last three games, Desriveaux distinguished himself with high-level performances that saw him catch eight passes in a 33-10 win against Hamilton, catch seven passes and score a touchdown in a 38-24 win over Winnipeg (July 4), and add two receptions in a 23-19 loss to the Calgary Stampeders (July 10).

Desriveaux was shown lots of confidence by both coach Marc Trestmann and quarterback Anthony Calvillo, the former starting him at slot-back despite the return of all-star veteran Ben Cahoon, the latter by throwing 17 passes his way, all of which he caught. For Number 82, his performance against Winnipeg marked his first game with over 100 yards in his CFL career.

His touchdown against Winnipeg came on a spectacular end-zone catch for the Laval-des-Rapides athlete who was playing in front of his parents and friends among the sell-out crowd of about 21,000 at Percival-Molson Stadium.

"We practiced the play all week," he said of his first CFL touchdown. "I saw it in my mind's eye. It all unfolded as I had imagined. There was no surprise in the catch. The play was designed specifically for me," Desriveaux emphasized, with modesty, but certainly reflecting self-confidence.

"It's a 'trip' to score a touchdown in front of your parents, friends and fans. My goal is to get to the end zone. All players want to get there, but few achieve it," he adds.

With his recent performances, the Laval athlete has shown beyond any doubt that he belongs in the CFL.

"I want to prove to the coaches that they made a good decision when they put me into the starting line-up. The more passes I catch, the more my confidence grows. It's a matter of momentum. There are five or six pass receivers, and when Anthony (Calvillo) shows enough confidence in you to throw you the ball in the end zone, it's quite flattering," he admits. "I enjoyed my best game in the CFL against Winnipeg," he says.
On the right track
Desriveaux has left no doubt as to his abilities, following his play in the Als first three games of the 2008 season. He's been perfect, catching all 17 balls thrown his way. His play has put a lot of pressure on head coach Marc Trestman to put in him into the starting line-up.
The return of Cahoon
Desriveaux has no illusions concerning the return of his mentor, Ben Cahoon, to the line-up. But it doesn't worry him. "The Alouettes are not going to pass over a player of Ben Cahoon's caliber when he's in good health and ready to play. I knew that taking Ben's place would be a temporary situation. But I also knew I had to make the best of the opportunity, like I did last year with the injury to Dave Stala," he said.

"I don't doubt that the coaches will find some way of putting me into the line-up. I'm forcing their hand. I can also play at the wide-receiver position."

Desriveaux makes no bones about the fact that Ben Cahoon, a future hall-of-famer, is an inspiration to him. "I had lots of opportunities to learn from him in training camp and throughout last season, especially in the way he prepares for games. I tried to learn as much as I could from him and to put into practice what I saw."

As far as what he has learned, Desriveaux wasted no time in applying to game situations what he picked up from Number 86. "If I can accomplish half of what Cahooin has done, I will have had a nice career," he concludes.
