Mr. Stanley Plant, President of the Chevra Mishnais Jacob Josef Synagogue, is pictured, at left, with Ashley Abramovitch, Miss Teen Quebec 2008, and Mr. Alan De Souza, Student Technician and Job Placement Officer at Laurier Senior High School. Last summer, Mr. Plant personally and generously contributed to the community-contact aspect of Ashley’s efforts to become Miss Teen Canada 2008, after reading about her need for community support in a July edition of the Courrier Laval Weekly News. Mr. De Souza also pitched in with a contribution of his own from ADL Productions, a show-staging company he founded and which he currently operates with two partners. "Come to Chevra Mishnais Jacob Josef Synagogue’s Giant Bazaar"
Doors wide open for very important community event
Stanley Plant is no stranger to community action, and the number of people and groups who have benefited from his generosity are far too numerous to mention. It doesn’t take much for Mr. Plant to dig deep into his pockets at Jacob’s Stationery, which he owns and operates as a family business, and come up with a contribution to any cause he deems worthy of financial and moral support.
But now, if you can believe it, the tables are turned and Stanley Plant needs the community to help save one of Quebec’s venerable institutions, the Chevra Mishnais Jacob Josef Synagogue, of which he is the president.

The Synagogue, at 715 du Sablon, in Chomedey, has been a mainstay of western Laval for the past 45 years, with earlier roots in Montreal, having first opened its doors there some 80 years ago in 1929.
Community-reach-out
“We need the community’s help. We’re at a crossroad. Our operating expenses are rising because of increased social-cultural-spiritual activities but our revenues are declining and we are in danger of closing our doors if we don’t get help soon,” Mr. Plant told Courrier Laval in a recent interview.
“We’re not looking for handouts. All we want is for the community to become involved in a fund-raiser that will take place at the synagogue on Sunday, September 7, 2008. Come and visit, pick up some great bargains in clothing, house wares and a whole bunch of other assorted goods,” Mr. Plant specifies.
Chai-Life: moving forward
“We want your support but we promise you’ll get some valuable stuff in return at great prices. But more importantly, you’ll be helping the synagogue get some financial security so that it can continue to render quality services to the community,” Mr. Plant states, pointing to several regular programs offered by Chevra Mishnais Jacob Josef, including a new initiative – Chai-Life – launched this past spring by Yehuda Nicolas Rapaport to resounding success.
This lecture series, which has packed the hall at the Synagogue on several occasions, featured a broad range of renowned speakers (lawyers Aaron Pollack and Michael Bergman and Dr. Richard Simon, among others) who shared their wisdom, expertise, and experiences in various walks of life with the people of the community.

“We’re very pleased with the outcome of projects like Chai-Life. It shows that the community needs opportunities like these to exchange news and views with the special guests who have a lot to contribute to making things better in many ways,” Mr. Plant notes, with characteristic realism and infectious optimism.

Chai-Life returns August 20 with a visit by Dr. Martin Lubin of Plattsburg State University (New York), who'll speak on "What's Going On In America".
The Bazaar
Bargain hunters and bazaar lovers will have lots of inventory to delve into, as Mr. Plant and friends are actively engaged in preparing a grand event that will be sure to please.

It’s an all-day affair, with lots to do, see, peruse and take home, – from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Sunday, September 7 – all at very reasonable prices, promises the organizing committee.

Watch the pages of Courrier Laval Bilingual Edition in the next few weeks for more details concerning this important community venture, an event which will reap benefits for a large number of people, both at Chevra Mishnais Jacob Josef Synagogue and in the community-at-large.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact Stanley Plant for more information. He’ll gladly answer your questions. He can be reached at Jacob’s Stationery & Variety, 4877 Notre Dame Blvd., Chomedey, (450) 681-1117.
