Chomedey Cummings Centre Media and You lecture series: a who's who of radio, television, and print communication
"How our lives are affected by what we see, hear, and read"
Described as 'an opportunity for us to be enlightened about how the media affects us', the upcoming Chomedey Cummings Centre Media and You mini-series promises to deliver some pearls of wisdom and meaningful insights that will surely enhance one's appreciation of media and its impact on daily lives.
Join us for this exciting mini-media series," says Chomedey Cummings spokesperson Claire Nudel, inviting the community-at-large to the four-part program that kicks off September 8, at 7:00 pm, at Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue, with a visit from renowned CJAD morning man Andrew Carter.
"This project, which has been in the planning for several months, will feature well-known personalities who will broaden our perspectives on how the media affects our lives," Mrs. Nudel adds. The series, which will also feature CTV's Tara Schwartz, the Montreal Gazette's Josh Freed, and CBC's Frank Cavallaro, will delve into themes of varied interests: the Changing Face of Radio, the Reasons for Going Behind the Lens (TV), communicating meaningful messages through 'writing with humour', and Global Warming – Is it Real?
Andrew Carter
Andrew Carter opens the series on the evening of September 8, when he'll explore the changing face of radio, a topic he knows plenty about, having spent most of his adult life (about 25 years or so) behind radio microphones at all hours of the day and night, on many local radio stations as well as others in other parts of Canada.
Participants at this lecture will probably be asked to keep their questions short and few, since Andrew usually gets up before the crack of dawn to show up at CJAD as his usual cheery self, to give thousands of listeners in the Greater Montreal area (including Laval) their wake up call (sweet and dulcet, for sure) between 5:30 am and 9:00 am.
Tarah Schwartz
Two weeks later, Monday September 22, Tarah Schwartz brings her extensive acumen of television experience to the second lecture of the series. The veteran reporter, now at CTV, will provide personal and professional insight into 'why some people are inspired to go behind the lens' to bring the world into homes on a daily basis.
Josh Freed
Eclectic, erudite, knowledgeable, and funny, Josh Freed comes with his special brand of verbal cleverness and unique perceptions of the meaning of life, and shares his views on how print media helps advance the cause of the human condition through humorous writing like his.
Josh brings his insightful musings into the challenges of daily living to Chomedey on Monday, October 6, with a lecture he's entitled 'Humour Me with the Write Stuff'.
Frank Cavallaro
Everybody talks about the weather, and it shouldn't surprise that CBC weatherman Frank Cavallaro will do something about it – not the weather, that is – but delve into the causes and reasons for certain weather patterns, especially recent anomalies that seem to be newly-prevalent.
Frank Brings with him a couple of decades of 'weather work', the consummate pro who's delivered the 'weather goods' across local radio and television outlets, from CJAD to CBC with CTV, CFCF (CIQC) among others in-between. He'll challenge the audience with his usual wit, humour and knowledge in a lecture that will stimulate discussion and controversy, billed as "Is it Really Global Warming. October 27 is Frank's turn to speak to members and friends of the Cummings Centre. Please note that his presentation starts at 8:00 pm, to allow him enough time to get to Chomedey following his CBC TV evening -news weather report.
The Chomedey Cummings Centre 'Media and You' mini-series runs on September 8 and 22, and October 6 and 27, at Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue, 1025 Elizabeth, in Chomedey. The first three lectures begin at 7:00 pm, the last at 8:00 pm. The fee for the entire program is $40 for members and $50 for others. Individual sessions are $12 for members, $15 for others. Refreshments will be served. A registration session for the lectures and for membership in the Centre takes place this coming Tuesday, August 19, 9:30 am to noon, and 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, at Young Israel Synagogue. Membership fees for 2009 are $20, valid from August 2008 to August 31, 2009.
