Saint-Martin District residents want their speed bump back
Road sign announces 'phantom' version much to neighbourhood's dismay
Residents of Fauteux Street in Saint-Martin District are dissatisfied with the answer to a petition they submitted to the ward’s city councilor, Alexandre Duplessis, this past spring.
The petition requested the reinsertion of a speed bump they believe was instrumental in providing road safety in the neighbourhood for the past 13 years.
Ironically, the sign announcing the speed bump to motorists has been up since the beginning of summer but there’s so sign of the ‘phantom’ installation.
According to Stéphane Barbeau (pictured), one of the major forces behind the petition, the curve in the road has been quite problematic in the past, causing several accidents.
“We fought for it for 13 years, and we’re still fighting for it,” he deplores.
“Despite our petition, the city has done nothing. Cars go too fast and there are children around. If the speed bump was in place for 13 years, there must have been a need for it. What’s happened to this need? Why doesn’t it exist anymore?”
Saint-Martin District city councilor Duplessis answers that he’s met with several residents of the community and reports that most of them don’t think a speed bump is necessary any more. According to him, the traffic on the street is not as heavy as it has been in the past.
