These happy young people of Laval Liberty High School give all indications that Sports Concentration Programs are to their liking and a major reason why they stay in school and succeed at their academics as well as in their community-contact initiatives. In the picture are the 2007 Quebec AA High School Juvenile Football Champions – The Panthers – many of whom return this fall (2008) to compete in AAA action, following their unblemished season and Bol d'Or Championship last year.

Sports Concentration Programs give 'disadvantaged students' leg up on self-esteem
Re:"For children who excel in sports" (Education, August 17).
I'm glad to see that such programs are gaining ground in Quebec! I don't know about the rest of the world, but the US has had great success with sport programs.
It is also interesting to know that the students who benefited the most from this weren't always the typical top performers. Many students coming from "disadvantaged" families were able to use sports to develop/build their self-esteem and better integrate into the community.
