Brace yourself, the 30th season of Hockey Laval is on its way, having been launched this past week at a press conference at Restaurant Graffiti by association president Michel Demers and in the presence of the region’s new hockey ambassador, Pascal Vincent.
Hockey Laval will continue this year to push its 2007-2008 theme of Winning does not happen on the bench, a concept organizers want all coaches to buy into in order to promote teamwork and equality of opportunity. The objective is very clear: teach youngsters to develop through fun in a context of team play.
The season
The 2008-2009 season officially opened for AA teams this past week. Other categories, both boys and girls, will start their schedules this coming weekend.
The year marks the return of BB and CC competition for Atoms and Midgets, adding nine more teams, not counting the 10 girls teams competing in the Interregional League.

Association president Michel Demers explains that “Hockey-Quebec has brought winds of change to Laval. More players will be part of training camps.” And let’s not forget that 80 other players will be involved in the Sports-Studies Program at Georges Vanier High School.
The ambassador
Hockey Laval’s new ambassador for 2008-2009 is Pascal Vincent, head coach and director of the Montreal Junior Hockey Club. The Laval-born Vincent played successively for the Gouverneurs and Riverains before joining the ranks of the Midget AAA Régents, a springboard for him to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
“This is not where I want to be,” he stated at the press conference. “I’d rather be with the young people. I want to sit down with them and talk. Problems are easy to detect, but I’m more interested in finding solutions and being part of the solutions.”

Vincent pulled no punches, delving into the thorny issue of fighting and violence in hockey, making clear statements as to what solutions he has in mind to bring the problem under control. “It’s the culture of hockey that has to change and that begins when the players are still kids.”
Special events
Hockey Laval will host several special events this year. The first of these is the Richelieu Development League’s AA Junior All-star game scheduled for the Cartier Arena November 29. On March 8, 2009 the Laval West Arena will be the site of the finals of the Montreal Metropolitan Hockey Development League in pee-wee, bantam, and midget AA. In girls competition, a tournament is on tap for December 9 to 21. And December 7 has been set aside as the date of the annual Laval Hockey Hall of Fame Brunch.
