The wonderful world of Italian language, literature and culture
The PICAI Italian Program thrives in Laval
By his own admission, Romolo Chiarella is a lover – of language, literature, culture and education.
Fluent in at least three languages and competent in a few more, Mr. Chiarella has taken on the mission of passing on his passion for everything Italian to hundreds of children who attend the PICAI Program of Italian courses he runs out of Laval Liberty High School on Saturday mornings, 9:00 am to noon.
"It's the traditional labour of love, the desire to have children ages kindergarten to senior high school learn, appreciate, enjoy, and benefit from getting in touch with their Italian origins, a sort of Italia in Quebec and Canada experience that enriches not only the children but also their families, their schools, and most importantly their communities," Mr. Chiarella, Director of the PICAI Centre for western Laval told Courrier Laval Bilingual Edition in a recent interview.
One of three such centres on Laval island, the others located in St. Paul School in Duvernay, and Odyssée des jeunes in Vimont, the PICAI school at Laval Liberty is a wonderful amalgam of many cultural pursuits, embodied in a program of diversified learning activities that range from basic classroom grammar to literature, history, geography, and sports and entertainment – and the beauty of it all is that it doesn't only take place within the walls of the school but also radiates out into the community – from the Centre de la Nature to Little Italy.
The staff
"But none of this would be possible without the contribution of an excellent staff of professionals, teachers who love children and who have an effective way with language and culture, bringing the best of what Italy has to offer to these kids whose families are proud of their roots and who want them to carry into Quebec and Canadian society a third mother tongue in addition to French and English," Mr. Chiarella explained, with lots of pride ringing in his own voice.
The Program
Classes at the PICAI Centres started this past Saturday, September 20th, but Mr. Chiarella will keep registrations open for some time. "We'll be spending the next couple of weeks evaluating student competencies in Italian for the purpose of placing them in the right level," says the pedagogue who still manages to get into the classroom himself from time to time. "We will be keeping the registration process operative until we're satisfied that we have transmitted the message to the community," he specifies, adding that as of now the numbers are up and he expects them to climb higher in the next few weeks.
If you wish to register your child, or would like to take the course yourself (adult courses are also available), just show up at 3200 Souvenir in Chomedey this coming Saturday, September 27 or subsequent Saturdays, from 9:00 am to noon. "Come and see us, we'll welcome you with open arms and provide all the information you need," Mr. Chiarella concludes.
