Cynthia Roy (New Democratic Party)
The candidate
Originally from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and currently residing in Mirabel, 26-year-old Cynthia Roy is the mother of a little girl born this past January. Holding a degree in Animal Biology, she has just completed her law studies. After joining the New Democratic Party in 2005, she ran for the first time in the federal election of 2006, in Beauharnois-Salaberry, where she picked up 7.5% of the votes. She is an elected member of the NDP's Administrative Council, Quebec section.
What are the issues in the riding?
Although she doesn't live in Laval, Mrs. Roy spontaneously expresses a grasp of local issues. Poverty and youth crime in Alfred-Pellan are of concern to her, she says, adding that in this regard, prevention is the key. "The earlier the intervention, the less likely is the chance of young people falling into juvenile crime." Preventive action, she adds, has to be channeled through coordinated efforts of local groups. The Conservatives are on the wrong track regarding young offenders, she says. "Hundreds of studies show that it's not with severe punishment that the problem is solved." Public transit is another priority of hers. "For residents of Alfred-Pellan, the Metro is not close." She deplores the fact that the new suburban commuter train link in the east will completely by-pass Île-Jésus.
