The Education Reform in action: students, teachers, and administrators of the Phoenix Alternative High School Community, are pictured at a special voters-in-training event which brought politicians from three major political parties to the school, as part of the Secondary 4 History and Citizenship Education program. "It was a strengthening of the students' exercise of citizenship through their study of history," says teacher Jerry Cohen, the major force behind this project of applied hands-on learning. Candidates visit Phoenix Alternative High School
'Interesting, informative, and environment-focused' – says student Kimberly Pereira Melo
On October 3, representatives from three parties in the October 14 Federal Election took time out of their hectic campaign schedules to come to Phoenix Alternative High School to talk about themselves and their party platforms.
Mr. Robert Carrier, Bloc Québécois, Member of Parliament in Alfred-Pellan Riding (in Laval east), Mr. Marc Drapeau of the Green Party and Mr. Michel Le Clair of the NDP (both running off-island in Terrebonne-Blainville riding) made presentations and answered our questions.
Mr. Drapeau interested me because he said his party was going to take action to clean up the environment and to deal with global warming. I was happy to hear that the Greens are willing to help the situation. I don’t know whether the Green Party has the potential to deal with other political issues, because it is a new party on the market and has never elected a member to the House of Commons.
I also enjoyed Mr. Le Clair’s presentation. As the New Democratic Party representative, he explained his issues in an interesting way. Some NDP goals are to make life more affordable for the “common person”, to increase taxes on big companies, to create jobs for us when we graduate, and to deal with environmental issues.
In line with the other two candidates, Mr. Carrier expressed the Bloc’s dedication to improving our environment. His main focus was on the history of his party which I found informative.
All three candidates had some great ideas. We thank them for taking the time to come to Phoenix and wish them luck on Tuesday.
