Déjà vu all over again as Laval island returns all incumbents to Ottawa
No election surprises in Laval
There was some suspense as election returns started to come in, and only in Alfred-Pellan and Laval ridings, and then there was none. In the end, Laval-island's political colours remained identical to those at dissolution, with the same four MPs returning to Ottawa.
Even the surprise that might have come about in Laval-Les Îles never materialized, as Liberal incumbent Raymonde Folco not only retained her seat in the House of Commons, she did it with a percentage point gain from the 2006 results, coming in at 40.2%. Her ex-colleague, Agop Evereklian, a converted Conservative, finished a distant third, at only 20.7%, behind the Bloc's Mohamedali Jetha (23.7%).

No surprise in Marc-Aurèle-Fortin either, where the BQ's Serge Ménard, incumbent, held on to the seat with a majority of 11,662 votes and a 45.4% share against runner-up Robert Frégeau of the Liberals. Mr. Ménard's vote share in this election represents a five-point drop from 2006.
A bit of cold sweat
In Laval and Alfred-Pellan, incumbent Bloquistes Nicole Demers and Robert Carrier might have felt a bit of a cold sweat an hour or so after the polls closed as results trickling in put Liberal rivals Alia Haddad and Wilson Saintelmy slightly ahead, but not for long, as the finally tally showed them winners again with comfortable (although reduced) majorities relative to 2006.
Throughout the Laval ridings, the New Democrats rode the wave of the sympathy vote that saw their party make significant gains across the country. The four Laval NDPers each scored between 4 and five points higher in their ridings than the results racked up by the party in 2006.
Higher turnout than national average
While the total national turnout slipped under 60% of eligible voters, Laval's electors did a better job of exercising their democratic duty, led by the riding of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin where 67% of them cast ballots. Afred-Pellan (65.3%), Laval (61.6) and Laval-Les Îles (61.1%) all scored higher voter-turnout rates than the Canadian average. (N.V.)
