Montmorency College prepares to defend provincial title
Nomades open Collegiate AAA schedule next week
After their surprising conquest of provincial College AAA Basketball last year, Laval's Montmorency Nomades have greater expectations to fulfill as they begin defense of their title this coming week.
The 2007-2008 season was memorable for the Nomades as they upset the regular-season champion Dawson College, causing quite a surprise in stopping the vaunted Blues offensive machine, downing the Montreal Cegep 79-69 and earning a berth in the Canadian Collegiate Championships.
This year, despite losing their two top scorers, they should still be one of the teams to beat in the AAA Collegiate League, in the opinion of the team's new head coach, Daniel Grimand.
High hopes
"We're aiming for the top of the standings," he says. "The players we lost have been replaced by good recruits and we're expecting another player to transfer to our team after the holidays. I expect nothing less than an explosive team with lots of firepower,"
A basketball coach for two decades, Daniel Grimand has worked as a coach with the Centres provinciaux d'excellence du Quebec (CPEQ) and in the same capacity, to this day, for the Federation de basketball du Quebec.
Training camp
In pre-season exhibition matches to date, the Nomades have split six games with teams at the university and senior levels, winning three and losing three. They've also beaten College Sainte-Foy in the process.
"I like what I've seen so far. There's still some work to be done in fine-tuning our system, but I've seen the team's potential. We're anxious for the season to start," coach Grimand explains.
The games that count
With training camp over, the real season now begins for the Nomades, with a home game scheduled for this coming Wednesday, October 22. The visitors are College Ahuntsic
