Michelle Courchesne
The candidate
Incumbent Michelle Courchesne won Fabre riding for the Liberal Party of Quebec in 2003 and 2007. At dissolution of the National Assembly on November 5, she was Minister of Education, Leisure and Sport, Family Minister, and Minister Responsible for Laval region. Married and mother of two, Mrs. Courchesne's educational background is in sociology and urban studies at university level. Prior to becoming MNA in 2003, she served as a Laval municipal councilor, and on the boards of various corporations both private and public (The CBC, the National Bank of Canada, the Quebec Mental Illness Foundation, and the National Theatre School of Canada). She was also director-general of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
What are the issues in the riding?
Mrs. Courchesne points to several major concerns, among which is the need to expand des Bois Avenue for safety reasons, to counteract the danger associated with increased traffic in the areas served by this major artery. She also wants to provide more protection for the Sainte-Dorothée woodland through an infusion of resources from the Fonds vert (Green Fund). She also assures that residents of the riding will have access to a new CLSC on the western end of Laval island within a year. To the need for various infrastructures (fairgrounds, sports complex), Mrs. Courchesne adds public transit to her list of priorities. Academic success, reducing the drop-out rate, protecting the islands around Laval and a park in the Saint-François archipelago are among the other objectives she intends to pursue in the National Assembly if she's given a third mandate.
