"As you know, when Laval Liberty does something, we always go to every possible limit and as far into the community as the occasion demands!" is the way principal Eric Ruggi sums up his school's latest foray into educational and sports ground-breaking.
This coming Saturday, February 21, Laval Liberty will be inaugurating its new outdoor hockey rink, but with an exceptional difference. The event, which should boost the hockey concentration program at the school, will be held in conjunction with CBC Hockey Day in Canada," Mr. Ruggi told Courrier Laval, adding that confirmation for the CBC's involvement had been received early in the week.
"This of course has elevated all of our plans to a new standard. CBC will be filming footage as of 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. The footage from the school and the rink will be introduced by Hockey Night in Canada host Ron Maclean and will be featured as part of Hockey Day In Canada coverage between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, during the Montreal Canadiens hockey game," Mr. Ruggi, a strong supporter of school sports explained.

There is an extensive program of activities to go along with the CBC event. Thursday, February 19 & Friday, February 20, there will be a Young Timers Elementary School Ball Hockey Tournament for Laval. Both schools' gyms (Laval Liberty and Laval Junior) will host this tournament for local elementary schools on both days. Laval Liberty students and staff will support and host the teams in coordination with junior students.
The big day
Saturday, February 21, 2009 promises to be a huge day not only in school sports but also in the history of English education in Laval, as the CBC comes to Laval Liberty and Laval Junior high schools to capture precious moments in the life and times of these two school communities whose sports concentration programs have greatly improved the academic performance of not only participating student-athletes but the general student population as well.
The CBC will then televise the segment on their national network across Canada, an historic occurrence for English education in Laval.
Another step in the right direction
Comprehensive studies on the impact of sports on academic performance conducted at the two schools have convinced teachers, administrators, parents, students, and Laurier School Board officials that the impact is significant, judging by the improvement in graduation rates at the senior level since the programs were introduced. The Fraser Institute recognized Laval Liberty High School as one of Quebec's top two public schools in academic improvement over the past six years. The school ranked second to another Anglophone Laval institution, Phoenix Alternative High School for the same period.
In the Laval Liberty Concentration programs, students can also focus on art, music, or theatre, which when added to sports, provide lots of motivation and opportunities for many students to stay in school longer and perform at higher academic levels since a minimum general average of 75% is required to qualify for, and remain in the concentration programs.
