Panav and Kimberley-Ann excel in tennis
At Quebec 18 and under Championships
Montreal's Panav Jha and Kimberley-Ann Surin of the Laval Multi-Sports Tennis Academy took top honours in singles and doubles at the Quebec 18 and Under Tennis Championships in mid-March.
Kimberley-Ann, third seed, scored an upset over the favourite in women's singles, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, at the Carrefour Multisports. "I'm happy. I expected to win. I didn't give up, even though the second set was more difficult," admitted the newly- crowned champion, who is all of 14 years old. "It was an advantage to play on courts I'm familiar with. It was a nice weekend. Everything went well," she added.
Kimberley-Ann also took honours in women's doubles, combining efforts with Priscilla Nunez. The duo had the better of Roseline Dion and Martina Tripovici in straight sets of 6-3 and 7-6.
The win qualifies the young champion for the upcoming Canadian 18 and Under Tennis Championships scheduled April 6 to 11, in Ontario. She'll also be competing in the 16 and Under Canadian Championships in Laval March 28 to April 4. "I'm going for the experience in the 18 and Under. I would like to at least reach the semi-finals in the 16 and Under," she concluded.
Laval's Catherine Leduc, from Tennis 13, also did well in the competition, finishing fifth.
It was a similar scenario in men's competition, with Panav Jha winning in both singles and doubles. He too tasted an upset win, beating favourite Isade Juneau 6-3, 7-5. Jha joined Damien David in doubles competition, beating Juneau and Felix Vaillancourt 6-4, 6-1.
Hugo Verdi-Fortin places third
Hugo Verdi-Fortin, also a member of the Multisports Tennis Academy, finished third, beating Felix Vaillancourt 6-2, 7-5.
Mathieu Sarrasin, coordinator of the event, was very pleased with the caliber of tennis played in these Quebec Under 18 Championships. The level of play was superior to previous years. Last year, there were many withdrawals. In our fifth year, the event is now beginning to take shape. All went well," he emphasized. "I'm very happy with the way our players performed. Kimberley-Ann and Hugo were brilliant," he concluded.
