There'll be no flooding
Heavy rains did not materialize
As the weather held cold at mid-week, river waters flowed without incident. Emergency measures personnel on Laval island heaved a sigh of relief.
"A warning of rising levels had been in effect for a few days. As a lot of rain was forecast for today (last Wednesday), there was a risk of overflow, but the cold temperatures took care of that," explained Laval Police spokesperson Nathalie Lorrain.

"Furthermore, there was no ice cover on our rivers this year. When ice sinks in the spring it's the equivalent of an ice cube falling in a glass of water. It spills water all over!"

Residents living near river banks who are quite familiar with these spring thaws were nowhere to be seen at fire stations looking for sandbags and other materials, a good sign that the 2009 version of flooding did not come to pass.

"There was a little bit of water in streets," noted Mrs. Lorrain. Some sandbags were seen in susceptible spots, such as Riviera Street in Fabreville, but no house was affected. The threat is behind us. There'll be no more flooding alerts. Water levels will begin to drop as of tomorrow."
Placid spring
The last major flooding in Laval occurred about 20 years ago, in 1990, when 1200 homes were evacuated and considerable damage was suffered. Residents got around in their streets with rowboats. "We keep watch on these houses every spring," said Mrs. Lorrain. "These residents are the first to be advised in case of flooding. But things have changed. There's been less snow in recent years, except for last year. The temperatures are milder, some residents have erected brick walls or stone barriers and municipal bylaws prohibit certain types of work on river banks (that would compromise the situation)."
