Everything in life has a purpose
On Tuesday, May 5, Chevra Mishnais Jacob Joseph Synagogue hosted two special guests. Rabbi Moshe Schmahl from London, England, and Barbara Shahmoon, from Montreal, co-authors of the book, “My Story: A Quiet Mystery. A True Story That Goes Beyond Reason.”
This book is Mrs. Shahmoon’s personal journey from secularism to how she grew to a personal relationship with God. She discovered that by reading the particular part of the Torah corresponding with the day specific events happened, such as the day she was born, she was able to glean more about herself, why she was here, and her purpose for life.
In her quest for truth and through her desire for more spiritual knowledge, Mrs. Shahmoon met ultra-orthodox Rabbi Schmahl, and they both learned from each other’s unique perspectives and findings.
Together they shared with us their discoveries on how to deepen one’s relationship with God. Mrs. Shahmoon also told us of how, as she kept searching the daily Torah portion for explanations on certain events, she found that nothing happened by chance, but every event is significant and has a purpose.
“Many people ask, ‘Why did this happen to me?' Everything in life has a purpose,” Mrs. Shahmoon stated. “The time I invested in Torah correspondence was leading me closer to God and helped me accept myself as God made me. It was very difficult to get there and still is hard to stay there.”
Rabbi Schmahl pointed out that the ultra-orthodox and the layman are equal in that they must both endeavor to have a relationship with God, and though He may seem distant, if one searches his soul and studies the Torah, one draws nearer to God.
Several dozen people attended the event, hosted by Yehuda Rappaport. Following the authors' presentation, the audience enjoyed delicious cinnamon buns and drinks served free of charge.
Mr. Rappaport said he will continue to bring knowledgeable speakers to Chevra Mishnais Jacob Joseph Synagogue to discuss interesting topics of all kinds. For May 19, he has invited an expert to speak on today’s economic situation. Chevra Mishnais Jacob Joseph Synagogue is located at 715 du Sablon, in Chomedey, Laval.
