Chomedey Chapter JWIC
On May 4, Meaghan Williams, social worker from the Alzheimer’s Group, spoke to members and guests about symptoms of the disease and how it affects patients. Her informative talk outlined the progression of the disease and encouraged everyone to “keep doing crosswords and Sudoku and keep your brain active”. On June 17, the Chapter is traveling to Ottawa to visit the Royal Canadian Mint, the Casino Lac Leamy in Hull, and the Byward Market. Departure from Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue is at 8:15 am. Arrival back in Laval is anticipated for around 7:00 to 7:30 pm. $45 for members and $50 for others. Lunch, gambling and tips are extra. The closing dinner of 2008-2009 is scheduled for June 24, 6:30 pm at Casa Grecque, where and when, says spokesperson Sheila Kirstenberg, "We will be entertained by Natie Rabinovitch." Wednesday, May 20, 1:00 pm: Lori Lubinger, director of training and group services of Agence Ometz (formerly called Jewish Family Services) will address members and guests. "Mrs. Lubinger will speak to us about services available from the agency and what contribution we can make to the work of this very important organization," says spokesperson Phyllis Mazer, by way of invitation to the community-at-large."Ms. Rubinger, who is a graduate of Concordia University in Applied Social Science, is responsible for helping low-income women develop business skills; she also helps new immigrants find their first job in Canada," Mrs. Mazer adds. Laval Volunteer Centre
There is an urgent need for volunteers to accompany semi-autonomous people or others with health problems to run regular errands. Volunteers are also needed to accompany individuals for chemotherapy treatments, dialyses, and physiotherapy. If you are in good health, have patience, trustworthy, and empathetic, this kind of volunteer work is for you. A car and driving permit are obligatory, but expenses (gas, etc.) are paid for. As well, the Centre is in need of volunteers for the June 8 Laval Chamber of Commerce and Industry Golf Tournament, to be held at the Le Blainvillier Golf Club. Lunch and transportation provided for all volunteers. Reminder: the Centre needs and accepts non-perishable food donations year-round to keep its much-needed and heavily-used food bank stocked.
