The founder, architect, and sustaining force of Mondial Choral: Gregory Charles, who needs little introduction, having acquired an international reputation for excellence in music, is pictured all smiles at the rooftop press conference unveiling the full program of activities for Mondial Choral 2009, the 5th anniversary of this world-acclaimed Laval festival of music and song.

Four continents and six countries represented at Mondial Choral Loto-Quebéc 2009
True to his inimitable style and penchant for the presentation of exciting news in novel ways, Gregory Charles unveiled the program for Mondial Choral 2009 from the roof-top of his Pointe-Saint-Charles loft this past week. The fifth edition of this now renowned international festival of music and song takes place in Laval June 19 to July 12.
"This is where the idea for the creation of a grand festival of choral singing was born," Gregory Charles stated, basking under brilliant sunshine he hopes will come back to visit during the 20-day festival, which he said has become the largest in North America, and the third largest in the world in just five years.
Returning as a focal point is the outdoor aspect of the festival, held at one of the world's most beautiful urban parks – Laval's Centre de la Nature. Notably, the headliner for the Centre de la Nature part of Mondial Choral 2009 is international superstar Charles Aznavour, who'll be accompanied by thousands of choral singers and a symphony orchestra in a June 21 concert.
The next day, June 22, a new edition of Les Feux du choeur will provide a grand opportunity for a symphonic and pyrotechnic tribute to the fabled Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberté's dream-come-true, this year marking its 25th anniversary.
A who's who of Quebec entertainment
Robert Charlebois returns to Mondial Choral June 23, after a three-year absence following his appearance with the Cowboys Fringants. In a pre-recorded message, he stated he was "happy to celebrate the Fête nationale surrounded by all the beautiful choirs who make the festival such a huge success."
"Robert Charlebois is our Elvis Presley. No one before him had this thundering sparkling style, energetic stage presence and the talent of a great musician," emphasized Alexandre Désilets, whose alternative rock music will open for Charlebois in the first part of the June 23 concert.
The Quebec group, Mes Aïeux, will also be on hand at Centre de la Nature June 24, and no one will want to miss a dream concert starring Michel Rivard, Daniel Lavoie and Paul Piché.
10,000 choral singers
Loto-Québec's Mondial Choral 2009 will have something for everyone as the festival welcomes a record number of choirs and singers, 800 of whom will compete in the Concours mondial de chant choral de Laval (the Laval World Choral Singing Competition) – all of it presented in 200 performances across Laval island. These 20 choirs are from four continents and six countries: the United States, the Congo, Colombia, Haiti, Belgium, Greece and Canada.
What's new
Among two of the novelties to be experienced at Mondial Choral 2009 are an urban opera – Carmen dans la rue, to be performed by the Théâtre d'art lyrique de Laval June 27 on the steps of Sainte-Rose Church, and evenings with seven artists-composers-performers – Le Cercle des auteurs – who'll present personal and collective works, in a three-night stand June 26,27,28 at la Maison des arts de Laval. Among these seven 'auteurs' are Amélie Veille, Amélie Larocque, Jérôme Couture and Anique Granger.
Gregory Charles also proudly announced the coming of Eric Whitacre, arguably the world's greatest living composer of music for choir, who'll be featured in a gala production July 11 at Sainte-Rose Church.
Also returning for 2009 are two of the most successful concerts of last year's Mondial Choral - Les années jeunesse and the Choral Marathon featuring over 100 choirs from all over Quebec. And let's not forget a concert by the Collège vocal de Laval, fresh from winning the most prestigious prize at the Venezia in Musica competition.
Following last year's experience of setting up central headquarters at Centropolis, Mondial Choral returns there in 2009. It's there that among other activities will be opportunities for singers and choirs to meet, greet, interact, practice or simply relax between shows, concerts, performances, and events.
Mondial Choral Loto Quebec 2009 will unfold June 19 to July 12 in all parts of Laval island. Copmplete program information is available at 514 935-9229 or at
