Sports and cultural complex for Laval: $96 million project gets government boost
The project for a multi-purpose sports and cultural complex for Laval picked up speed recently with the announcement that the federal and provincial governments would kick in $62 million to make the dream a reality.
Michelle Courchesne, Minister of Education, Sports and Leisure (MELS) and Fabre MNA, federal MP (Lévis-Bellechasse) Steven Blaney and Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt jointly outlined the provisions of this aid to the municipality at a press conference this past Monday.
The total financial package coming from Quebec and Ottawa amounts to $62,194,012 with the feds pumping in $15,877,762; the rest ($46,316,250) will come from provincial funds. $30,438,488 of the Quebec contribution comes from the Quebec-Municipalities Infrastructure fund, the rest, another $15,877,762 from its share of the federal infrastructure fund. Another $33,842,488 from the Cité de la culture et du sport de Laval (a corporation representing the city), ups the total to the $96 million projected for the cost of the complex.
The plans call for a 140,000 sq. ft. complex which will house three ice rinks with seating capacities of 250, 2000, and 7000, a gym, provisions for concession stands, a sports medicine centre, a sports equipment store, 15,000 sq.ft. for offices, indoor parking for 50 cars and 3500 outdoor parking spaces. The complex will be built at the corner of Saint-Martin Blvd West and Daniel-Johnson Blvd. on land currently owned by Ville de Laval, land which is being ceded to the Cité corporation for a long-term lease of 20 years.
More details and updates concerning this projected sports and cultural complex will appear in future issues of Courrier Laval Bilingual Edition.
